My wife and I had dinner with her boss and his wife last night to celebrate her 10 year anniversary with her company. The two of them are amongst the most fascinating, kindest and nice people it has ever been my pleasure to be around.
On so many levels, we consider them a part of our family. They have been incredibly generous to us over the years, have been understanding when troubles arose and stood by us.
Last night they shared some Vega-Sicilia Unico 1974 with us, which may have been the best red wine I have ever tasted. Her boss is a wonderful cook and made us an interesting shrimp appetizer, a wonderful fruit salad and a terrific Chilean Sea Bass entree.
Better than that was the conversation, where we talked about the challenges of a working relationship mixed with friendship. As a very wealthy couple, the two of them have to deal with the reality of people looking to take advantage of them in all facets of their lives. Our conversation turned to con artists and their methods (in which we discussed the mythical "snow chicken") and to our own interests (Plato vs. Aristotle, religion, women's issues, etc).
I hope that we didn't disappoint the two of them with our company, because we really enjoyed theirs.
